If you read my other thread, you would see that I had to replace my 350D after a month, because I found the serial number was missing. I also notices a couple of other slight quality issues with the camera.
1. Both cameras came with a filthy CMOS sensor. the first photos on both were covered in dust spots.
2. On my first camera the main selection wheel (the one just behind the shutter) was realy stiff and difficult to turn. The new one turns easily.
3. The viewfinder correction (for people who wear glasses) was on its limit for me, and the image wasn't quite sharp. I have a -1 dioptrin, and the handbook says it goes to minus 3. the new one has room to spare.
4. The serial number was missing on the first camera

The new camera seems better, but I am surprised that the cameras can be so different. Maybe camera 1 was a Monday camera.

It's possibly just one of those things that happens in the mad rush to meet product shipping dates. I seem to recall people had issues with original run 300D Cameras back when they were the new body on the block.

All I know is that I haven't had any issues with my 300D, in about one year of apparently light use. (Crossing my fingers and knocking on wood.)

It depends where you got it for the reasons. If it was from a store it might be a demonstration one. I used to work in an electric store and the sales people often opened brand new cameras to show customers. Especially a new release as they might sell out and have to sell the demo one. If it was online then it might be a returned one they have tried to give you. Or as you said a monday camera. Glad you got it sorted though. I have recently returned a Sigma lens as the Zoom function didn't work properly. The sellers tried to tell me I had dropped it but when I asked them to send me it back so I could take it too trading standards they quickly changed there mind and sent a new one. Some people will accept anything just to get it sooner with less hassle. Like yourself I don't. I want what I pay for, nothing less.

I am very pleased with my 350D not that I have learned a few things after talking with canon.
1. It is very common for any DSLR camera to come from the factory with sensor dust. I just read up on how to clean and it did it perfectly with the "hurricane blower".
2. I have not had a problem with my selection wheel. I feels just right. Not to difficult to turn but just enough that I will not accidentally turn it when pressing the shutter.
3. The Dioptric standard setting is -1 but the range is +1 to -3 this should allow someone to set it even without there glasses on. I wear glasses but able to see well without them when I set the dioptric setting.
4. Yes the serial number can rub off mainly because it is place right below the tripod mount. If you have a warranty issue canon will honor the warranty you just have to send in warranty card [copy] with the camera.

I suspect the problems were all Teething problems, as the first camera was one of the ones in the first delivery.
I'm very happy with the camera.

Im in UK. Trading standards is a government funded scheme. They make sure there is a standard in trading from prices to quality etc. I have never actually contacted them but the mention of them seems to work when you suspect you are being bumped off.

Thanks Justin - Sounds like a good thing to have...if it works. I'm not aware of any easy process we have in the US for a dispute such as you mention (someone enlighten me please). I've dealt with the Better Business Bureau before (once), but they were not too helpful.
