Buzz, what lens were you using? It's definitely the perfect time of year ot shoot these guys, but I also find that my 200mm is way too short.

Red Wings are notoriously shy around their nesting area. Be careful in the state of Florida. It is quite illegal to photograph the Red Winged Blackbird in that state. The reason for the law is that they sometimes abandon their nest if disturbed.

It is the 70-200 F/4L with Tamron 1.4x converter.
Rural Michigan, So nesting laws in Florida shouldn't apply, :)

Well c'mon up here to Wisconsin, there are so damn many of the things it's not funny. I literally don't go a day without seeing one, and all I have to do this time of year is walk out the bac door to hear them calling, LOL. gur-gul-eeeee!

Eh, we've got the same issue. I tired with the 70-200 with about the same success as you had. I have not tried with the 2.0x converter, but even then, it would take some patience, and my goal is to catch them in early or late light.

A tape recording of a male bellowing it's "KONK-KA-REE" song works wonders to draw them in closer. Just play it for a short while and snap away for a minute or so then move not to stress the birds too much. This used to work wonders with Common Yellowthroats too.

Eeek I photographed one in Florida back in January. It wasnt anywhere near the nest though. Hope they dont come across the border looking for me!
