Having recently moved to digital and using a Minolta Z3, I thought I would improve my creativity and flash range by buying a flashgun and slave unit. In the good old days with film, that was all that was required. I used my newly acquired toys earlier and got some odd results. On manual at 1/60th on f4.5, I took a photo of an object at the other end of the room, normally at my onboard flashes limit. I then used the second flash and slave and took the same photo. This turned out way more underexposed than the first picture. I backed this up by repeating the exercise many more times, reducing the shutter speed to 1 second thinking it may be a sync issue, but still less exposed than with the onboard flash solo. To me this just doesn't make sense. Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks in advance,
Mex

likely senario is :
a preflash from your onboard flash is triggering the slave
which occurs prior to shutter opening

you will have to check you manual if there is a what to turn the preflash off ..

Yep, sounds right. It might ont be possible to turn off the pre-flash, since it is used for exposure control.
In the event you cannot turn off the pre-flash, there are "digital slaves" that can ignore the pre-flash (or flashes, there may be more than one pre-flash).

Whenever i used the slave flash i have my pictures always come out over exposed? Now thats when i use the slave wireless flash. Now when i use another flash i have and my camera doesnt do any of that ttl stuff for the flash so the only communication betweeen the cameara and the flash is the trigger the picture is half black and the other half is normal this has got me stumped the flash i got has a manual dial on the back i dont know how to read so i jus pic a number and shot and hope i get good results. .

The overexposure is prolly caused because the ttl is not functioning, so the flash is firing at full power. The solution to this is to manually dial down the power on the slave flash.
the half-black frame is happening either because the slave is being triggered improperly, or the shutter speed is higher than the flash synch speed. Trying a slower shutter speed may clear up the problem.

I found that the only way to turn off the pre-flash on my F828 was to put a flash on the hot shoe and use that, I point this backwards so I don't get a lot of light from it. I don't know why camera companies don't make it easy to turn off the pre-flash, it would sure be handy.

Thanks for the quick responses, but I am able to turn off preflash/anti-redeye and get a single flash from the camera. Even if that were the case, especially on manual speed and aperture settings, you would expect the first picture to be the same as the second (assuming the slave flash had fired on a pre-flash)? I'm still puzzled...
