In the pet challenge I got some negative responses - people thought I had no clue what the topic was about simply because my nude g/f was tucked into the photo. Well, my coming entry in the abandoned building promises to be no better.

Should you decide to tell me the photo bites, hey, that's ok (it likely will). But please don't tell me I don't get the challenge topic. I do it's just that I want to look at it differently.

OK, I won't tell you you don't get the challenge topic. But you don't get the challenge. It's not about forcing us to look at nude pictures of you gf. It's about trying to become a better photographer. If you'd rather try to shock people, to incite anger and controversy, that's easily done. But that's a cop out. It's like admitting the you don't have the photographic skills to compete nor the desire to learn them. You are not picking up the gauntlet.

Well said, I'll second it.

I think that's fair enough...I didn't read the comments but I saw the picture. I say 'keep at it' but try and find a way to cover all your bases (don't compromise, just optimize)...a photo that is technically flawless, that speaks to me, is unique and still meets the challenge.

I think that your entry is a decent start and I don't personally feel you were simply trying to shock anybody.

Keep at it!

Yeah, 'thinking outside the box' is very easy. Any moron can be creative as it's part of the nature of humanity; turning that idea into a piece of art is the hard bit and it requires a lot of effort.

As the blokey said only 1% inspiration the rest is just hard work. Sure it's easier for the talented but it's never easy.

Yes, sex can score better here...i have no other explanation for this
getting a 5.7. I too did on the test that sex scores better.
My pet photo did a bit better than expected. I am VERy disappointed in my Extreme entry...and with abandonded building i am trying something a bit different, processing/look wise and expect to not make 5 out of it. I could not enter it at all...but then my update button will be bored and lonely, and we can't have that now can we.

I did a few entries to test the voters - i got the results i expected (comment wise). I still cannot fathom the scoring though...

I see nothing off-topic about the image. The pet is there -- both of them. I actually expected more images of significant others than there were, it is not that uncommon for them to be referred to as 'pet'.

However, a word of caution when doing further social experiments. Sex sales -- alwasy has, alwasy will. It is an emotionally charged subject and produces an emotionally charged response -- some negative, some positive.

But, to get to my point, since the image has a strong emotional charge the quality of the image has much more weight than it would normally. Simply put, people judge nudes harder than non-nudes. If the bed had been occupied by just the cat, the judging would not have been as harsh.

This is why it is said nudes are tough to do, and why many have said they do not feel they are 'ready' to do nudes. Make a few minor mistakes and the emotional charge you were expecting to evoke will bite you in the ass ...err, so to speak.

But, when done well ...

I offer up but two words to refute this "George Bush."

Thanks for "getting it."

I did not toss my g/f in there to shock or titillate anyone. If shock or titillation is what they want there are a lot of web site I can recommend that will do a more splendid job than that photo could have. While me dedication to the lofty concept of art or respect of the sensitivities of others could be greater they weren't. And likely they never will be. Still, I feel no obligation to abandon my silly soul and goofy ideals.

First and foremost, I love artistic nudity...but when I see it (also guns and blood) in EVERY challenge.. I would call it 'desperation photography'

I think it is cool if you want to experiment with the themes. I just don't think you should complain when people don't like it..if you want to be radical then don't expect the masses to accept you. If what you want is their approval, then do it their way.
Go and shoot and don't ask people to react how you want them to, or you are just being a hypocrite.

I for one liked the concept. I thought it met the challenge in a unique way. You have to admit though, there is room for improvement in the execution. The three bigest areas that made me score it low was the poor pose, the flat overexposed light, and the distracting background. I would keep the out of the box concepts; just work on improving the execution.
