My first attempt at photographing food. It was my sister's birthday yesterday and I had my camera with me. I took this picture of my meal as soon as I got it. What do you guys think?

I think you need to (preferrably) figure out how to post a thumbnail image with a link to the big one, or put a warning in the thread title.
Lighting looks a little too harsh and highly angled for a typical food shot to me. |

The light is too harsh. Not much you can do with the camera you have, unless you can put enough stead light on it thru a soft box so your flash won't go off. |

Greg, I don't think that was from a flash - it is coming from the left side, not from the front. And those little cameras are quite nifty, you CAN turn the flash off. |

Your camera has complete manual control if you want to use it. |

Yes, my camera has full manual options that I use most of the time. However, for that shot, I used auto mode in macro. The harsh light was not from a flash (I hate flash with a passion and never use it unless it's random shots of friends at parties) but from the sun setting right out the window.
I'm mainly looking for commments on composition, as I'm not really sure what angles food plates are shot from.

Look in a cook book.

It's not that bad an angle, and it's not that bad a picture. There's a contrast issue, and the sliverware is haphazardly placed, but I have seen a LOT of worse food shots. I took a quick pass it in photoshop. There's more potential yet...
"Real" professional food photography is an art unto itself, with all sorts of lighting and styling tricks. For a "candid" food shot, this is damned appetizing...
