I'm sitting here going through about a 100 shots I took today for the Abandoned Buildings Challenge. I like five. My favorite won't score well because it may be off-topic (it focuses on a sign, rather than the building itself). Two others look good, but feel like snapshots. The last 2 are more artistic, but potentially "risky".

The sad thing is that no matter what I select, none will probably score better than "average". I'm not thrilled with any of them.

In a similar situation, how have you made the final decision?

Breathe deep, meditate upon the quest, call upon the merciless editor within you, let your passon debate him... then ask your wife.

This happens to me all the time. A lot of my shots are very similar since I'm still getting the hang of my camera. But if I have one or two (or 3 or 4 or five :) that I like, I will upload them one at a time, print the page out, go back and look at them online again and make notes. That helps me narrow it down. Then I usually just go with gut but a lot of times it comes down to the very first one I really liked to begin with. So maybe it's a waste of time ;) My friends call me a dork, go figure!

Get in line haha...I been asking my girlfriend for like 20 minutes which one she likes better. AHHHH...oh well sometimes you just gotta pick one and go with it. Personally, I picked one that I like that probably won't score that well. I get too update button-happy when I'm doing good -- it relaxes me when I do poorly in a challenge.

I took about 60 RAW shots today, came home and edited 25 of them, decided the other 35 weren't good enough, asked my husband for input, re-edited 5 of them, walked away for a few hours, re-looked at them, re-edited some more, and decided to go back tomorrow for a better shot.

sigh...

But I'll bag the 'big one' tomorrow! :)

I took a total of around 35 shots last night and today. Im stumped. Can't decide. I been here for 2 hours editing photos and I like about 4 of them. None are spectacular and they all are average I think , but why am I havin such a hard time choosing? lol

Go with what you like and not what you think others will like...
If it doesn't score well at least you should the best picture you think it is... this is how i usually do it...
At least when i go through my portfolio i feel happy with what i see.

Well lemme see........... When faced with that predicament, I make a print of the pics, then I take all my photos prints .... climb to the top of the stairs... throw all them in the air, and the one that lands the furthest down the stairs is the one I pick.

You can see just how successful I have been by looking at my overall average.........DONT DO IT.

Discraft, you are absolutely right.

Of the 60 shots, there are 3 I really like. I would love them if...well, that's what I am going to fix tomorrow. Sommetimes you have to see the results on a large screen to know.

As for liking or worrying about other people, I have started choosing about 3 I really like then asking my husband for input for the challenge entry. He is my everyman because I have weird taste. I have learned though, that I score better on images my heart is into.

1. Make 2 backup copies of each of your favorite pictures
2. For each image identify the 1 inch square which you find most interesting/challenge worthy/satisfying
3. Crop the image to that 1" square
4. Open the second backup of each image and crop so that you're left with your most annoying/least challenge worthy/dissatisfying square inch
5. Rank each of the cropped 'good features', assigning the highest rank to your more-preferred feature; duplicate ranks are allowed, but discouraged
6. Rank each of your 'bad features' crops as above, giving bigger numbers to worse features
7. Subtract the 'bad features' score from the 'good features' score for that same image
8. The picture that ends up with a score closest to pi (+-3.14159) is the one you should submit ;)

I will just upload them under my various usernames and vote "10's" for myself on all my photos.;)

OK, really, my wife usually knows best.

Post the one you like yourself and learn not to fret about whether it will score well.

Ok, I clearly bombed with my selection. Went with a 'risky' option - current score of 4.4 and falling.

what would you have thought of either of these others?

Maybe none were very good. Live and learn..
