A number of concerned comments were given to my submission to the PET PORTRAIT challenge. I'm afraid that your concerns are well founded. The photo was taken in rural South Korea. The dog and several dogs in the area aren't well fed and are restricted to their sheds or cages. If I had noticed this in the states I would have simply called the local animal shelter or the police, but there isn't an infrastructure here in Korea to prevent this sort of behavior. I'm pretty sure they are being bred for food. Eating cat and dog is illegal, but it is still widely practiced.

There are a lot of stray dogs in the area. A lot of the dogs that wander on the Army base are adopted by Soldiers or units as mascots. They are are well looked after. Unfortunately there is a market for cats and dogs as food, and as long as that exists I don't think the overall system for taking care of abused dogs and cats will improve.

I'm about to move from Korea back to the states, so I don't have very good internet access right now. If there are any more questions for me you can email me through my profile or post them to this thread, but I probably won't be able to respond much for the next 24 to 36 hours.

Sorry, to post and run, but it was fresh on my mind, and I know many of you are genuinely concerned.

Brian.

Well, the dog isn't well tended, but this photo was! Great shot. Highly underrated in the challenge.
