I don't get why my pet picture scored so low....can someone give me some insight? It's one of the better pictures I have taken so far...

Jordan, first congrats on a very nice capture.

Two reasons I would suspect. One, some voters are going to feel your border may be a bit large. In this photograph I don't think it's distracting, but it might not appeal to others.

Second, in order to really appreciate this image the viewers monitor must be calibrated. Voters with uncalibrated monitors may simply see a lot of black and no detail.

Thanks Garry. What is a "normal" pixel size for a border? I guess I didn't realize that a border would effect how people score a pic.

I wish more people had calibrated monitors cause the pic looks good to me....

Anyone else able to help me out?

Just my opinion, but here's what I would have done:
Cropped more on left to off-center the cats head.
Desaturated somewhat the orange in the collar so it doesn't compete with the eyes. The collar and the eyes are the only things in 'color.' The collar, being brighter, wins the viewers attention.
The size of the border doesn't bother me. Puts the cat into a 'window frame' that works for me.
I think the background works well.
I think this is an excellent image for selective desat.

Hope this helps and it is just my opinion - someone else may have a better idea.
edit to change right to left. Sorry!

The lighting appears to been a bit harsh in front - not so much for the photo because the white fur is exposed correctly, but there seems to be some "glare" on the black fur around the face, and the dead giveaway for me was the cats pupils are extremely contracted. Cool cat though! ;^)

The problem I see with the portrait is that the trees in background and the lighting between them simulate the cat's coat color and compete with the portrait itself..also the collar needed to be removed, it draws your attention from the eyes and face..I think a solid background in a color, a little closer to cat, with the head tilted a little toward camera to avoid the overly light eyes would have made this picture stunning..the border appears to detract, also..I hope this helped, I am not a pro but these things are noticeable to me. I love black and white cats: my two lived to 20 and 21, and were the greatest pets.

If his cat is anything like mine, the window is the best place to get a decent pose - hence a busy background. Perhaps a blur applied to the background? But then you have the tricky task of selecting the cat to invert and work with the background... ;^)

Thanks everyone for the help. I guess I still don't see why it scored so low but there were a lot of good pictures. Thanks for the input!
