If you've entered a challenge then why not be able to start voting on it for the entry's that have already been submitted??? This way you can increase the amount of time you have to vote and for someone like me could use the extra time.

Of course you could eliminate the update button and nobody woul be able to see their scores until the after the challenge closes.

I dont see much of a reason why not.....

One problem we would have to fix though, You can change your submission up until the start of the challenge, so you could vote on something different than what is actually submitted

Then the vote doesn't count. Besides how many people actually change their entry??? I bet it less the 10 and thats not really a big difference on the total amount of entries.

Sorry, but there's an entire subculture of entrants who change their entries frequently.

I've never heard of a contest where you vote before the entries are received.

have a button where the entry is locked in then the person can start voting and their entry can start being voted on...

I keep changing the image until a few hours before the voting starts. It could be the same image, but processed differently.

Usually when I submit I change my mind about three times. This wouldn't work the dates are there and that is the time allowed in my eyes.

I would not be in favor of the idea. I change the photo before the challenge ends in about 1/3 of the challenges. I think it happens more frequently than you might think. If so, I would spend a lot of time voting (and commenting) on photos that were subsequently removed or replaced. Wastes my time.

Might be an interesting topic for a SC survey. "Once submitted, do you remove or replace your photo before the challenge deadline: Never; Occasionally; Frequently; Usually."

To this survey question I would respond Occasionally.

You have obviously misread what was said. I said AFTER your submission you should be able to start voting but that would lock in YOUR submission. You coul also make it so that only people that have locked their submission in to be able to vote.

The obvious problem is that this gives an unfair advantage to photos submitted early.

If I arrive at the track early, should I start the race without you?

Perhaps it was to peruse its contents, subsequent to which she opined it was "useless" I would assume... :O)

...unless of course she can establish what the contents are without opening it, which of course she wouldn't have done, thereby saving you the trouble of asking why she opened it in the first place.

Just a thought

I'd place it in the bottom 10% of that category. I've seen (and probably started) many MUCH more useless threads. ;-)

:) :0) LOL j/k hehehe jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢

edit: adding more little faces & abbreviations to make sure everyone knows I'm joking... ...or am I?

Not a good idea.

Say they lock me out of editing my current entry...then I can start voting. But then I get together with dpc member JOE and he says he's going to do this for the upcomming challenge. Then I tell him oh no, don't do that, there's like 50 of them, do this instead there aren't any...now Joe has an upperhand.

I like it just the way it is.

no offence, but this is the stupidest idea i have ever heard.

04/10/2005 07:09:21 PM · #22
Just to play devil's advocate, what if we could vote but our entries weren't locked? When they saw what other people's entries looked like, maybe some people would go back and improve theirs. What better way to learn and improve our photography?

Not that I'm really in favour of this idea, but it could be interesting to try it out just once and see what effect it had on people's scores.

I gotta admit I do this also, get a shot after selecting and editing a few to the requirements and I have one in my mind then. Edit this a little more until I'm happy and then submit it but an hour or so later I am tempted to go change a few small details or tweak it here and there whilst voting on the weeks submissions.

I see the concept and like it but there would not only have to be some thought go into this but some great web design to allow people to change submissions until voting begins even if they have already had votes upon them which would then be void. Great suggestion but I don't see it working unfortunately...

My 2 cents anyhow...

What's "broke" and needs to be fixed? Locking entries ... allowing some people to vote but not others ... it sounds like tons of added complexity and opportunity to introduce bias with no discernable benefit.
04/10/2005 07:41:35 PM · #25
well i change my entry sometimes so this wouldnt work for me, plus what if you submit an entry but it doesnt look right once youve submitted it..i've heard of this happening to a few people.
