As I am a _total_ newbie to photography, can anyone give me a good definition for a macro? I've only started taking pics in February, and I've NO schooling in arts or photography or design or anything - just winging it.
Thanks for the help.

macro photography which has some how adapted that name is in fact micro photography. pretty much just close up shots. any photo that has a 1:1 or 1:1+x ratio.

If your camera has the function (probably does) the macro button will have a little flower icon next to it.

To elaborate on the first post, true macro photography is commonly defined as when the subject's image on the sensor is as large (or larger) than the acutal size of the subject in real life. When the sizes are the same, it is referred to as 1:1 magnification.
It's also very common for images with near-macro magnifications to be referred to as "macro shots".
With today's digicams, it is even more confusing. The small sensors in these cameras make the traditional definition of macro a bit extreme. It's therefore appropriate, IMO, to use the term "macro photography" for any image where the field of view is less than approximately 36mm wide (the width of traditional 35mm film). That's about 1.5 inches.
