I was d/l some pics and noticed a gap in the series of numbers. I had already deleted the card, so I used a file recovery program to see if I can recover them. No luck - it won't even recognize the card in the card reader now. Canon Zoom Browser doesn't recognize the card, either.
But my camera does recognize it! We re-formatted it and it still doesn't work. Is the card toast now?

I have never had a card die. Check your reader.

The reader works fine with a 2nd card. |

Did you reformat it in the reader or in the camera?
How long has it been since you rebooted your computer?

Rebooting has at least gotten the reader to recognize the card. The recovery program is now scanning to see if it can find those missing pics.
Thanks for the help!
BTW - how do you know for sure it's the card? How do you know when they die? |

Not really sure. I suggested rebooting only because I used to leave my computer up all the time and had a problem with my CD-ROM reconizing music CDs but not software CDs. I rebooted and it fixed the problem. Most CF cards should never die they have no moving parts. How big of a card is it?

Are you using a recovery program specially for CF cards?

It's a 256 mb card. No, the program is a generic recovery program - Handy Recovery 2.0. |

I think most if not all do leaves gaps that are filled when taking the next shot.

It was a series of about 40 pics that were deleted - not just individual shots. So it was quite obvious that there was an issue. |

....CF card just died??
What brand of CF card is this? |

CF cards can certainly die, but it's not common. The memory they use has a limited number of write cycles, usually greater than 300,000. that means you'd have to write the same location on the card 300,000 times before it would be near failure. In normal use, that would take decades. It could also be that there is a defect in one of the chips used, or in a connection from the chip to the substrate in the card. In any case, you'd be wise not to trust the card with critical images unless you can veify the card was not at fault. A 256MB card is very cheap these days, even a 512MB card can be had for <$40.
