Well I just looked in an online 20D manual, and that's not what I see on page 21. It says:

"Continuous

The file numbering continues in sequence even after you replace the CF card. This prevents images from having the same file number, so image management with a personal computer is easier."

It doesn't say anything about using the card to maintain that numbering or continuing the numbering per the card.

Your quote from the manual refers to the the first "Continuous" file numbering mode, and sounds correct. However, if you continue reading, there should(?) also be a description of the second "Auto Reset" mode (at least there is in my hard-copy manual, p.61), which sounds like it could work like other people here have been mentioning. The first "Continuous" mode is the default, but the way files are numbered can be changed using the "File numbering" menu item.

The number is stored on both the camera and the card I think, and it uses whichever is biggest, which means most of the time the camera one is overwritten with each shot, or if you use a memory card with a higher number. However, if you use a memory card with a smaller number, that will be overwritten by the bigger number on the camera. At least, that is how it always worked between my G2 and 300D.

I don't know how the rebel or 10D work, but like I said in my previous post, it did happen to me. After experimenting at the store my file number jumped from 100 to 8000. I always keep my cards on continuous counting. Since I hadn't taken many pictures yet, I reformatted the card. Sure enough, the file numbering restarted at 001.

On a side note, the camera I was playing with in the store was supposedly a brand new one. I was shocked to see that 8000 pictures had been taken on it.

???

I run three cards every time I go out and format them every other use and I'm still counting. Weird.

Hi-ho,

A bit late, but those shots do look like reall small DOF, as someone else said..

Shoot something more flat at F/8 with that lens and see what you think..

Cheers, Me.

That is weird. I'm sure mine reset because for the first 100+ shots after the format, I had to be careful not to overwrite pictures that I already saved? What version of software do you have on your camera? I upgraded to tha latest, but I can't remember if this happened before or after the update. If I had another card I would test it again, but I don't. I'm up to about 1500 and would rather not start my number over.

Ok, some further experimentation shows that for at least some Canons, Ben (Konador) was right. The count is kept in camera, but if it sees a higher number on the card, it does update the camera count!

My experiment before showed that my Canon Rebel was not affected by taking a picture with my S1's card. However, considering Ben's statement, at that point, the counts on my card were always LOWER than the Rebel's count. My S1 on the other hand, did UP it's number to my Rebel's number.

I've never run across this because the count is indeed kept in camera, as LONG AS YOU DON'T INSERT A CARD WITH IMAGES that have higher numbers. In other words, the count isn't kept on the card, but it can be reset if you insert a card with a higher (but not lower) number.

It's a bit insane, actually! It's nice to know there's an easy way to reset your number if you lose it rather than clicking off the pictures as I did with my G2, but IMHO it should only do this from a special state, like 0.

In any case, the formula for setting your camera back to the lower number when this happens is simply to 1) Reset the numbering of your camera to 0 (a low number), and 2) Insert a CF card where you have placed an image file with the number just before the new sequence you want. You can just gen this up, but you probably need to use the folder structure/naming used by Canon. I have not done this experiment yet, but I probably will play with it later on my S1.

Sorry for any confusion before from my at least partly incorrect assertions!
