In speed climbing the climber is on top rope: The rope is fastened to the climber, goes to the top of the wall, and back to the ground where the belayer holds on to it. When climbers get to the top they push a button to show they've reached the top and jump off.
At one competition the belayers were ordered by the organizers to stop taking in rope when the climber was halfway up the wall, resulting in spectacular falls. Unfortunately, noone had told the climbers in advance and several broke down after getting back on the ground. |
