Does anyone know why I am getting a halo around the darker objects in the photo when I am running the unsharp mask? Its really getting on my nerves. Its almost making my submission for the "Abandoned Building" Challange look layered. And it also looks like crap because I can't get rid of it because of the rules... Any ideas of how to prevent this in the future?

Yes, you are oversharpening your image, applying to much USM.
Advice varies a lot but typical start values for USM are:
Amount: 100%
Radius: .3 (as was suggested above)
Threshhold: 0
You want to start from there and tweak USM until you get the most sharpening without halos. You can also try other basic rules sharpening techniques. Some were in a recent discussion here: Sharpening question
