I propose that anyone who isn't a paid member, but wins a Blue ribbon in the Open Challenge gets a 3 month "Membership" to enter the members challeges.
If during that time period they ribbon again, in a "members" challenge, they recieve a full year "paid" membership.
Any thoughts? |

Why not just go with a standard...
Blue = 3 month
Red = 2 month
Yellow = 1 month
If you are not a member, you just won a membership for that period of time. If you are a member, your membership just got extended for that amount of time.
I think that's a fairly, and reasonably cost effective motivator.

How about paying the SMALL fee and then if you win maybe a 3 month extention. Or if not a member and win you can get a 15 month when you pay for a year membership. If you can afford a camera and a computer, $25 is cheap, if not a paid member pay up then benefits start.

What about the people who have paid money for years to be a member? Versus someone like me who recently walked on the set could win a ribbon and get 3 monthns free. Is this a incenative to get people to submit to challenges? Encourage people to work harder or jus get a member ship? Hey this is a different perspective iam jus curious :)

Membership is its own reward. No reason to reward those who don't see the value in such a small fee. Although I would have an membership extension of nearly 2 years by now... |

Phantoms suggestion seems reasonable. You get a 'coupon' when a ribbon, and when you register for membership or renew it, some months are added. There might be a limit to keep constant winners from having a 300 year free membership :)

I dunno... BradP (among others) might never pay another dime toward his membership. |

I can't say that I care for this idea at all. The lessons learned on this site are invaluable when compared to the fee we are asked to dole out.
Just a thought.

Look at the fits that people throw now when all that is on the line is a little ribbon next to your pictures. Can you imagine what it would be like if there was something of monetary value on the line???
Besides, why give something to the folks not interested in supporting the site by paying for a membership anyway?

[[[Guess, in this case...I'd say kudos to the new member.]]]
But perhaps there is some sanity in a one (maybe two) win per year limit.

Nothing kills a suggestion like over complicating it.
- We started off with one year free to non-member for blue ribbon - seems simple enough.
- Change to 3 months for blue, 2 for red, 1 for yellow.
- Change to not restrict to non-members
- Change to limit awards per year
It has already become too complicated for me to endorse. :)
I am like many others who think of an idea to improve the site - some are good ideas and some just need to be debated and discussed to find out they are not. One thing I like a lot about the site is that they don't jump on every idea and implement it before understanding the ramifications and they do like to keep things relatively simple. |

This and other reward types have been discussed in the forums ad nauseum. If you wanna keep this a fun site with a minimum of cheating, keep it the way it is...

I agree.
BTW, "The way it is" includes threads like this. ;-) |
