I can't wait till processing speed for the average home PC is rated in the Teraflops...between that and the terabyte harddrives, it would all be tera-ffic. |

How would you back that up? About 1,400 CD's or only 150 DVD's!

Boy, I'd hate to get this thing half-full, then have it crap out on me...
As to your original question: If my calculater is correct, and I *generously* allow 36 MB for each 16-bit photo I convert from RAW 10D images, then I can store 27,777 on the 1-TB drive (1,000,000 MB divided by 36 MB).
If my shutter is truly rated at 50,000 clicks, then I could fill this drive nearly twice.
Edit - If I only store my RAW files (at ~6.5 MB per image), then I'll go through 3 shutters on my 10D (1,000,000 / 6.5 = 153,846).

When I buy that 1Ds Mk II I've been coveting ;-)
If I allow 10MB for each RAW file, save them all, and further, save about 25% of them as converted TIFFs, I come up with about 80,000 images. The shutter on the 1Ds should last longer than that, so I guess I need a bigger drive, LOL.
Ah well, we can all dream, right?

Eh. Just do what I do: whenever you need more room, go buy a new IDE drive and IDE to USB converter. Eventually, when you're tired of having all the crap on you desktop, you'll decide to put all the drives into one computer. I'm about to need my fifth drive. Here's the two attached to my laptop at school:

And that's not even a tenth of the wiring that's behind my desk on the floor!
My laptop has 3 HD's, 9 USB ports (USB hub), and 2 monitors. My laptop has more crap attached to it than most people do their desktops! |
