I beleive the remote cord is a 2.5mm stereo plug - radio shack will have the parts, and maybe a pre-built cord.

Hopper has a good idea to get maybe teh kit lens and 50mm and work with that. I did basically that - and discovered i miss macro more than i need the 70-300 range. Since a flash was on my list, I am getting it next (a metz 54 with a gary fong lightsphere 2 is to arrive...any minute now) and then either cokin P filters or the 70-300...then perhaps, just perhaps, i can hold still for awhile on new toys and master the ones i have!

Hi,
I am thinking of getting a very similar setup.
350D & 50mm F1.8
Instead of the kit lens I am thinking of the Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Zoom
& for a long lens the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
My budget isnt huge, but these lenses have had great reviews hopefully will last me a long time.
As for a Flash I am considering the Sigma Electronic Flash EF 500 DG Super as it has had really good reviews and is considerably less than the Canon equivalent. The only thing I really miss with this setup is a wide-angle. I hope it give you some ideas anyway, I'd be interested to hear what you end up getting.
Cheers
MARK

Have you been looking at my profile Lens list?

LOL
No i havent... nor have I been hiding in your garden late at night peering through the curtains...

Are you happy with all these lenses? I heard there are a few back focusing problems with the 70-200 F4L, but that hasnt really put me off.

Cheekymunky, that's my idea of a perfect set to start with. I have everything but the Sigma flash (I already had a 420ex), and I think they're all great.

I love all my lenses and I have had no problems at all with F4 L, but then again I would not know a bach focus poblem if it slapped me in the face with a wet kipper, LOL.

yes you would ... my 70-200 f4 back focussed and it was very obvious - you tell just looking thru the viewfinder ... couple weeks at Canon repair and it worked great.

(I have since sold it in search of the benefits of primes, but it was a very good lens)

Quick question as this thread is interesting... I'm still deciding on a longer lens and as everyone is on a budget... you know how that works.... but I want something that reaches 300mm at least...

So...

Anyways, Sigma 70-300mm is pretty much what I've been looking at before I stopped looking at the 135-400mm Sigma ... it's twice as much but the 70-300 ...

Now my question...

How does that lens perform, in your opinion. I've herd good things on it 135-400mm APO ... is it worth twice as much... I mean it does have a longer reach...

Just curious...

I know you asked about DPReview and I will say I don't know... however you can find a excellent User Report here with test shots and everything ... give it a go... check the links at the bottom of the link.

Mark, those sound like excellent choices. I wish I had known enough to get the Sigma flash vs. my Canon 420EX. The Tamron and the Canon should last you many years. The only thing is the wide angle coverage. Remember that a 28mm with 1.6x crop is about 50mm. Hence no wideangle coverage. I didn't think much about wide angles at first but use that coverage quite a bit now. I'd recommend you consider the extra $100 and get the kit lens for the wide angle for now and you can upgrade later. If you aren't into wide angle coverage, then forget it. But I think, you'll need that coverage if you do all types of photography.

Moose101,

I haven't had much chance to really test it fully, but I did manage to get a couple of shots the other day. It was not a fully sunny day, and I am still learning the camera, but here are two shots from that day. I had to sharpen slightly and crop the shots.

And,

Hope these help, Steve

Edit: The tree was about 30m away.

Read it last night, until 2.00 am! Still looks like the ONE to me, even with that little niggle about changing the settings using the screen... I want it!

I have had the 350D for 2 weeks now, and am wrapped. Nearly 1200 photos!
I went for the 17-85 IS lens as I take my camera everywhere & don't like having to constantly change lenses. I also got the 50mm 1.8
Untll now I haven't missed the tele, but it is on my wish list.
Macro might be the next on my list. The 17-85 has a macro or closeup mode which is OK. Due to the 8MP you can crop pretty well.
A good flash will be added sometime, but untill then the built in works.
I have a good tripod. Maybe the release will come soon so I can do some Bulb exposures, or for closeup studio work, but again I haven't missed it till now, but it is relatively cheap.
