I don't often ask for a critique. But I really really wanted one on this shot. I thought is was extremely creative, artful and caught an almost mystical feeling of sorrow and longing in pose and composition.

Most everyone I showed it too thought it was a great photo. And it pretty much bombed in the challenge garnering one of my lowest placements. I'm kinda confused and daunted. Sure it's not a super sharp photo...it's not meant to be. It's a reflection off of a granite stone....

I understand it would have been more captivating if I could have had the inscribed text show. However, the sunlight conditions did not allow for it at the time.

Anyways, what can i do to improve on this photo and concept?

I asked for a critique. Sadly, it seems like i'm not going to receive a critique. (How do critique requests get handled? the few times i've asked for one i don't think i've ever got it. I know they're all volunteers, and i know lots of people ask for a critique on every entry. i've been a member for a year now and i still don't quite know what a critique looks like? *ponder*)

So I posted here....

I gave your photo my highest rating so I obviously can't explain low ratings. My guess, however, is people didn't get it. At first I was confused until I read the title then I understood what it was.

I really liked your photo and gave it a 7, I agree with dunamis that people who scored it lower possibly just didn't "get it".

I didn't get to vote this challenge (haven't paid yet).

I agree with the other comments about "not getting it". I'll be honest, I wouldn't have gotten it without the comments (except for the title). I think it's a great photo though. You had asked "what can I do to improve the photo or concept", so I'll try to give my two cents.

The reason it's hard to tie it to the theme IMO, is because of the background. My first thought of it was that it looked almost like an early morning walk on the beach, with a lot of contemplation in the subject. Obviously she's concerned with something, but it's just to hard to tell what. If the background would have had a more "cemetary" look to it, you would have probably scored better.

Anyway, I'm just trying to help. I know how frustrating it is to ask for help, and not get any. I hope my comments made sense and helped out in some way.

Thanks....my original idea was to have grave markings, inscriptions show up....sadly, the sun wasn't in the right position. In hindsight, the flash might have had some effect if I had used it.

I need to experiment more with this type of shot. Because I think its fairly unique. I mean, not a single other photo in the challenge even contemplated this idea.

Since you're asking:
To my eyes, none of this says sorrow or mourning. It is just a partial reflection of a person totally out of context and 100% relying on the title to give it some meaning.

Here is what would have made that photo better in my opinion:
Her posture appears (at least to my eyes) arrogant, stand-offish; what I can see of her face looks cranky. Different body language would have helped the message of "mourning".
Show some of the background of the cemetary around the headstone - it would put the photo in the right context, and give it way more meaning.

I like your take on it, I just don't think you pulled it off as well as you could have.
