Taken over the weekend for a friend, he needed a picture for flyers and business cards. Anything wrong aside from poor background choice, being too close to the background, and the bad hair?

I like the hair!

You could lighten up the background by desaturating the green channel a bit.

Hehe, he's about a week overdue on his haircut plus we didn't have anything to do his hair with (only water).

Apart from background or hair-do, there is also the issue of body language.
In this photo, he is looking down a bit. The posture is one of strength and authority.
It very very much depends on what sort of message he is trying to convey. The power thing could be perfect for his needs, but could also be to his disadvantage because someone feels threatened.

Or perhaps I am way more sensitive to such clues than I need to be. In that case, just ignore my ramblings.

Glad you picked up on that. He works in real estate so we tried to get strong poses. We tried some where he wasn't looking down or into the camera but those didn't feel as direct.

I could try that.

I think the crop is too tight at the top and not enough on the bottom
