I am new to the dpchallenge and have entered only two challenges to date. The first, "In the Beginning" and the last the "Rubber Ducky" challenge.

Although I am new to digital photography and specificlly still lifes I have had been into photography for well over 30 years exhibiting and selling images durying part of that time. This past Friday marked my first week of owning a digital camera and in a lot of respects it is not to different than owning a film camera but on the other hand it is vastly a different "animal" than what I am used to.

So what have I learned so far????

First....on the still life side of things....Durying Rubber Ducky I searched the house for a background that would meet the challenge requirements of being blue...couldn't find anything that I liked especially in the right shade of blue...I went to the stationary department of the local drug store to pick up a sheet of blue poster board. (wrong shade because it was the only shade they had)After discovering that there was a strange "purplish pinkish" halo in my image that needed to be eliminated, I discovered by my naked eye that this halo was visible even before the photo was taken because of the way light was being reflected off of the poster board's surface..... LESSON ONE..Poster Board does not work very well for backgrounds.

Now for working with Rubber Duckys....I was very lucky indeed to discover that my 11 year old daughter had a collection of several rubber duckys...I am ashamed to admit that I had no idea that she collected such creatures....I thought her pet rat was enough to keep her happy. That being said when she heard that I want to enter this challenge she kindly offered to let me use her collection as I saw fit. I viewed this as another chance for us to bond with each other and to form a closer father daughter relationship...

I was horrified to discovered that these "duckys" suffer from varying degrees of swimming styles...The first ducky I wanted to use was a ducky that had a diving mask on....This guy was surely going add much to the title of my image which I wanted to be, "D. Ducky Dreams of Diving at Dangerous Grape Reef Dodging the Dangerous xxxxxx xxxx " but as luck would have it, diver D. Duck could only float on his side.

Next came Surf Ducky. A beautiful sun tanned "beachboy" of a ducky who is riding a surfboard much like a God from a Pacific Island. Now I was getting even more excited, my new title of my image was going to be,"D. Ducky Dreams of Surfing Dangerous Grape Reef With His Friend " Harvey the Giant Clam "....Well....D. Duck's surfing style had much to be desired. In surfer lingo...D. Duck's surfboard "Pearled" (surfboards nose would only go under water) leaving D. Duck in a rather undigniified postion with is Duck "behind" pointing straight in the air.

Next came "glow ducky" he swim completly upside down leaving the words, "Made in China" visiable for the viewer to read. Pirate ducky came next...he sank before I could get to the camera to snap off an image....................................

Finally I settle on a Ducky with eye lashes who swam pretty well as long as he had the side of a glass of water to hold him up.

LESSON TWO.....All Rubber Duckys are not created equal.

Barry you may want to edit your post as it gives to many clues as to which photo is yours in the challenge
we try not let people know who belongs to what photo till after the voting has finished

Keith, thanks for the heads up on that. That was not my intention. I xxxxed out a bunch of my post. Hope that does the trick.

I wouldn't take this as the proper leson learned. I use poster board quite often for backgrounds and also employed it in my rubber duck challenge.

Perhaps the lesson to learn is that you need diffused light sources when working with highly refective surfaces.

Here is the setup for my shot:

It makes use of a PVC light tent and rip stop nylyon. Plans to build it are available here: //www.pbase.com/wlhuber/light_box
