Not sure if this has been suggested yet...
I've only been on this site for a few months, but there always seems to be a thread relating to comments (and how few everyone seems to get). I would assume that a good percentage of the comments go to the pictures that fair well in a challenge. I'm not sure there is a way to force people to give more comments though. Forcing a mandatory percentage of comments would probably just yield statement like "not for me" or "don't like it" which may not be helpful in improving your photography.
What if we went the sympathy route instead? During voting, in addition to randomly displaying the photographs, perhaps there could be a way to display them based on the number of comments they received. The photos with the fewest comments would appear first, while photos with more comments would appear later. People who want comments should try to give them to people who haven't gotten many comments during a challenge (a sort of "pay-it-forward"). This in turn would hopefully cause others to comment, when they see the number of comments on their picture rise. My hope is that the number of comments (along with the quality of the comment) would increase.
People may complain that this could bias someones voting, because you could see the pictures getting the most comments and use that information when judging the photos. In that case, perhaps there could be a "comment on a photo with few comments" button, which would show the photo with the fewest comments (or randomly pick one if there are several with the same number of comments).
My hope is that this will get a few more votes to those that didn't get many to begin with.
Comments (pun intended) are welcome! Thanks for listening. |

James,
Thanks for the offer. I think it's great that you give your time to comment on photos! I may take you up on it.
I'm a software developer, so I'm constantly looking for ways to improve things (just part of the job). While I like comments as much as the next person, I didn't start this thread just to get more comments for myself. I saw that many people were saying they wish they got more comments and it got me to thinking how I would accomplish something like that, especially for the people that didn't get too many comments to begin with. That's really why I posted.
Other than you, there hasn't been a comment on it, so I assume that this isn't a viable solution.

I think this has been debated and you have a pretty good idea. I would like to see what eveyone else thinks about this.

It seems like this could be an option that would be turned off and on in the "preferences" settings, like voting anonymously or seeing comments during voting.
If someone feared that this option would bias them, then they could turn the option off.
This option would not be available to non-members.
Great idea TD.

Currently I have only 3 comments in Cemetary, 7 In the Beginning..
that said I kind of like that these people chose to comment on my shot, just because..if I thought they were doing it out of good will I think I would benefit less from them. If I am not getting comments then I am not interesting people.

I feel a simple solution to a majority of the problems with voting and commenting is to offer more time. If the voting time were increased from one week to two, all of us would have more of a chance to vote and comment thoroughly. This would be especially helpful in challenges with 400+ entries.
Granted, if the voting period were increased, there would be a few changes: when the change was first implemented, we would have a week with no challenge results but this would happen only once; we would always have two member and two open challenges being voted on at the same time (four instead of two) with two of those challenges in their first week of voting and two in their second week.
There should be no need to increase the submission period - the one week period is ample and part of the fun of the site.

I get a lot of these comments during voting. Also to make it mandatory that you comment on so many photos you would also have the problem of less people voting than what now does. Also we have to remeber that there are some people out there that don't want comments. I am not one of them.
