My daughter is researching a new camera (she has my old Oly 450Z). She wants something small that will fit into her purse. I think she wants something along the form factor of the Casio EXILIM EX-Z3 or Minolta DiMAGE Xt.

We are just starting our research--I've looked on DPReview a bit and Steve's. The tough issue is we need to stay around $200 or below.

I was thinking of trying to find one that uses 2 AA batteries, because she has 8 NiMH batteries for her Oly and a charger, and I have lots of these. Buying a second Li battery adds $50 (and at least my philosophy is that you always need two sets of batteries--one to use, and one that's fully charged, or charging)

Also would be nice to find one that uses Compact Flash--I can give her a one of my 256 MB cards that way.

But those issues in mind, or even aside (since I know it may not be possible to find a good camera these days in that form factor that takes AA and Compact Flash), I'm open to advice of this group!

I don't think it has to be this form factor either. It's just that anything larger will be a harder "sell" to my daughter.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Edit: 3 Mpixels is fine, 4 is ok, more is probably not because of the extra storage requirements -- though I guess she could just set the camera to a lower resolution.)

I've been using my canon a510 for a couple of days now, and it's fantastic. It has all the features you might need but still takes brilliant pictures on auto mode, fairly low noise(obviously not slr like but better than many compacts) and it's very cheap.

Of course if you want an ultra compact it's bigger than the elph/ixus line and you might do better with those.

Also I am completely biased at the moment.

Looking over reviews on the web, prices, and features (and most of all size), I thought the best compromise between features and size at the $200 price range was perhaps the Nikon 4600. Anyone have any comments on this camera or the similar 4100 or 3100?

I never really liked the Nikon point and shoots. The operating system (menus and what not) always seemed sort of counter intuitive to me, but it's possible I was just too used to my old Olympus. Still, somehow my Mom's Coolpix and the one we use in the lab always bugged me.
