In reviewing the cemetary challenge I noticed how many submissions had the theme "forgotten" or "neglected." Does this say something about the mindset of all humans or is it just a natural result of the challenge?

Perhaps just a statement on the loathesome state of some cemeteries. The one I visited had recently been vandalized and also suffered from the brutality of winter storms.

I noticed this as well. We have a LOT of images of unkempt, neglected graves. It's both a commentary on the neglected condition of many final resting places and, perhaps, on what people find noticeable in cemeteries. Very few shots of clean, tidy, modern graves; lots of shots of old, neglected graves.

It's of cousre natural enough that after a couple generations the average grave will go unvisited, and equally natural, I suppose, that small cemeteries, old cemeteries, that become full to capacity will eventually fall into disrepair, as they're no longer commercially viable.

Graveyards, just like the bodies they contain, eventually "return to dust"...

People, on the other hand, are a lot more interested in old graves than they are in new graves, and I suppose the concept of being "neglected" or "forgotten" strikes a resonant chord in most of us.

I like the one that shows the message "He's not here. He is risen." My mom died a little over a year ago, and I don't go visit her grave because I just don't feel a connection to the person I lost and that gravestone. The gravestone reminds me of death, and a dreary end. But I believe that my mom really is in Heaven alive and eternal. So she really isn't there. Maybe that's why some graves are neglected. Just a thought.
