From Slashdot the news that some enterprising soul has hacked the Gimp to look and behave (as far as possible) like Photoshop. Should cure some of those usability headaches!

Original page and Mac version here.
Linux port here.

This one isn't an April fools btw.

There's UltraSPARC and Slackware builds available too now. Still no word on a Windows build but I'm sure it won't be long.

Huh? Photoshop has a lousy user interface. Why do you think it is so hard to learn? If anything, making Gimp look like it should be a disadvantage. :)

I don't necessarily think it is so hard to learn, but if you sit your average Photoshop user in front of the normal Gimp interface they'll click around for a few minutes then go back to Photoshop because nothing's where they're used to it being.

And Gimp is any better? I'm not saying Photoshop is good, but it's certainly no worse than Gimp.

Reading the replies to that post, it doesn't appear they've come up with a reliable Windows distributable yet. So, unless you are Mac or Linux, I wouldn't worry about it.

Megahours learning how to do the nearly the same thing to every photo anyway. I suck at PS : )

This year I aim to move my processing to the Gimp. I have a Windows box which does *nothing* but run PS (yet still falls over on a regular basis lol). Bibble has let me move the RAW conversion away from that box already.
The biggest obstacle is that because I suck at PS, I rely on a lot of actions and plugins to do things for me. Gimping all that is the bit I'm not looking forward to.

Yup, they both have "issues".
My ideal interface would consist of just a "Make this photo look good" button.

Reading my second post would tell you the same : )
There's a difference between "haven't yet" and "aren't going to" though. People have started working on it. Not their fault that Windows is so difficult to port to :D
