BTW the photo didn't ribbon. |
So were you at the tube station to capture the moment? |

I do not always mark comments as helpful, but do almost always. I figure that even if a comment is a simple "Nice photo", that is an encouragement. When someone gives a negative comment, they need to do a little more explaining, I feel. This is because we usually know what we are doing right, but we do not know what we are doing wrong(or why would we do it?)
So, those are my thoughts...

I only check the box if the comment is a constructive critique, if it´s destructive or just a "nice pic" I don´t check the box.
but the one commet I got the I find very amusing is this
Comment by Jozi:
i'm not fond of how the burning was done here. MUCH too obvious
commented on this picture
what I found so amusing is that I NEVER use dodge/burn, and there were no such tools used editing this picture :)
funny how the absent can be so obvious :P |

If a person takes the tme to comment, I take the time to improve his/her stats. if a person takes the time to insult, I take no time to improve his/her stats.
I have so much to learn that I appreciate any feedback. I have to little time, however, to tolorate rudeness, insults or stupidity. Guess who gets the 'helpful' check. |

I find it frustrating to make lots of comments, almost all of them considered, and not get even a "helpful", let alone a PM. |

Matthew you aren't the only person who feels that way... most people here seem to share your sentiments.I guess what I will do is check nearly all the comments as "helpful"..... since that seems to really mean "I saw your comment and really appreciate your taking the time to tell me how you feel about my photo" . I still wish there were other options. |

So you feel you SHOULD get a "thank you" pm for every comment?
(I am asking this out of interest, I know that without the face and voice clues it might sound mean or harsh, but is NOT intended that way at all....... it is simply a question)
You left a comment on my current photo. I don't totally agree with the point you made, but it was an interesting point and I appreciated that you took the time, and hereby thank you for it.
I only tick the helpful box if I can find something (at least vaguely) useful, and I happily ticked the box in your case, but had not intended to send you a pm.
Leaving comments is something we do on our free will. (I got a couple of rather nasty pm's as a thank you for (negative) comments I had left, which promptly made me slow down on the commenting a LOT more than I had intended to).
I now send thank you pm's for the very special, detailed and VERY useful comments that happen once in a blue moon, or to clarify/explain something if really necessary.
I know that some people would like a thank you for each comment, whilst others don't want that.
What is the ratio? Should we state such preferences on our profile page? |

I don't need a thank you. If you find my comment helpful then mark it as such. If not then don't.
When I get comments during a challenge I will wait until voting is over then mark the ones I find helpful and pm everyone that left me a comment helpful or not. If it is just a comment from nowhere on a photo that wasn't entered in any challenge I ususally don't pm.

Maybe I sounded a bit too negative - I don't expect to receive a "helpful" automatically - I am not an "expert" and some of my comments are less considered than others and probably don't warrant it (Beetle - don't know which pic was yours - or how good my comment was, but thanks for the thanks!). But my comments do reflect the reasons for my vote: even if not helpful technically, a comment might help a member understand why their vote is where it is, and that should be helpful (certainly is to me).
I have made 304 comments of which 188 are currently "helpful" - and this has taken several hours.
I, and I am sure many others are in a similar position, have received very few comments on my pics (9 on my first, 2 and 4 on current challenges, and a couple out of challenges). Each of them is greatly appreciated, not least because I know how time consuming it is to make comments, but also because even the slightest indication of a reason for a vote is very useful.
Looking through my comments, it is just slightly frustrating that some people do nothing to acknowledge what is more than a "nice pic" comment, of which there are many.
I think that it is polite to say "thank you" in some way when someone does something for you gratis. The best ways are by reciprocating (I think that rex07734 receives much reciprocal commentary from his generous donation of time in his "do you want comments" thread). Some kind of acknowledgment is reward for the commenter - and encourages them to continue commenting. Because of the anonymity, reciprocal comments cannot be made during a challenge. So an indication of thanks might be better. The "helpful" box is one way of doing that. A PM is another (even if just a copied and pasted "thanks for your comment on X - appreciated", which would take less time than it took the commenter to comment).
I don't take offence at silence or no "helpful" tick, but do like to receive thanks!
This sounds more serious than intended - I am not really that perturbed about it!

I had no idea that people really looked at the # of comments marked helpful in a person's profile as an indicator of their "stats"...
Of 600 comments, 1/2 of mine were made before the helpful checkbox existed. I must look like a real jerk to people who use that as a measuring stick when visiting someone's profile.

Thanks Matthew. Why have you posted any photos in that thread? I will go and comment on some of your images now.

Not yet - but very kind of you to offer. Will bear it in mind if I have anything worthwhile!
Cheers. |

most of my stats are less than desired. However My stats for helpfull to comments made are pretty good. I think I might have one of the higher ratios for that area. No ribbons and can't get my average to even a 5 but I like this # Made: 470 Helpful: 364.
