Couldn't find an answer searching the forums, so I'm posting a question on what is no doubt an old subject.
If I am hired to shoot an event, ie. a wedding, and later want to use one or more images from that event in my promotional materials, do I need a model release for every person at that event who happens to appear in the pic(s) I want to use? |

| Yes. Every person that is in a photo that you use. |

| Guess I'll have to coerce Grandma into signing a relea... um, a petition, yeah, that's it!... so I can use that shot of the bride & groom where Grandma just happens to be in the background, crawling around under the table looking for her teeth. |

The laws vary from state to state, you need to find out if your state has a "right to publicity" law and specifically who it applies to. To make sure that your promotional material remains consistent with your state laws and/or if a Federal "right of publicity" law is created (some people have called for this) it would be a wise idea to have a release for any and all people whose face/being is recognizable (also may include art, architecture, and other creations). There is a wealth of information about the right of publicity and privacy on the internet but you may want to check out these links first:

Disclaimer: I'm not a legal pro but these are my opinions and my understanding of legal information I've read.

Mostly, if you take the shot in public, you only need a release for up to seven people in the photo, beyond that - no.
