I've been using the AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 lens, and want something with a constant f-stop of 2.8.
I've looked at:
Sigma 24-70mm
Sigma 28-70mm
Sigma 18-50mm
Tokina 28-70mm
Tokina 28-80mm
Tamron 28-75mm
Tamron 28-105mm
Anyone have any suggestions?
I'm trying to stay relatively cheap. And I'm also worried about losing the wide angle of the Nikkor 18-70mm.

I use the Tamron 28-75 which is very sharp and good value. I would not worry about losing the 'wide angle' if you do desperately need it, use the old lens.

I'll ditto this statement. I was primarily using the Nikkor 18-70mm until I bought the Tamron 28-75mm. Now, the Tamron doesn't come off the camera unless I need a long zoom lens.

I'm a little surprised.
I would have thought that the Tamron was a step backward in quality.

I recently found myself wanting 2.8 mid range zoom, but I asked myself honestly what I really need 2.8 for, as I'm not doing sports or weddings as a source of income I decided that there is no justification in my desires. When I'm making the money from the jobs that justify the purchase then I will happily make the relevant purchases.
After being aware of my actual photography needs for the last month or so I've decided on the 24-120 VR as my next purchase. Other lenses that are on my wish list are the Sigma 10-20 (although I'm hoping for a Nikon version to be announced) for internal pics that I take from time to time for a magazine and a 105mm (or 135mm) f2 DC for portrait work. I'd also like a big, fast long telephoto for sports but this wont happen this year.
My personal preference is for original lenses rather than 3rd party alternatives, but this is just my opinion.
What's the main usage are you looking to use the new lens for?

I just wanted something a little brighter so that I could use faster shutter speeds when I take picture inside or outside where there isn't quite enough lighting.
Do you think that going with one of the 3rd party lenses would be stepping back in quality? |

I was thinking that too, until I read the reviews on the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di lens. According to the reviews it is right there with the Nikkor equivalent.

It depends on the lens. In the case of this Tamron, I would say absolutely not. Read the reviews out there, as there are a lot of good off-brand lens out there. Sigma makes some very good, economical lenses as well.
