I think we need a more elaborate member search function. I personally would like to see a function where I could look up members in a certain region (city, state, country) I think it would help bring together more folks.

and require that some standard for entering where you live. Some may not want to do this for privacy reasons, but I like the overall concept.

You can look up by state, under member search don't type in a name just enter the state and it will bring up all members from that state, I did it this afternoon to see how many fellow Nebraskans there are here....not many. |

If everyone in your state spells it properly and doesn't use a city or abbreviation, yes it will work. But there is no requirement to put any of those items in your profile in a specific format...

Isn't there a section for 'location' under community/photographer profiles? I haven't seen a 'non site council' dpc in a looong time, so I don't know if it's there for everyone, but it is there for me.

Yes, but I think the point is that a simple "location" box leaves for a pretty broad range of entries. Some people enter rather specific information but some leave it very broad. And there's no regulation either...to find people in my state, I have to search for MN and Minnesota and Minn and whatever other combination I can think of.
I think what the original poster is suggesting is a way to do an area search, like you do when you visit a business website and are looking for a location in your area. A "here's my zipcode, show me photographers within a 50 mile radius of me" sort of thing. |
