I have been thinking a lot about contacting various orginizations locally about some of the pictures I have taken. The problem is I really have no idea on the process. When you are dealing with newspapers and magazines, how much money would you expect for a photo? Obviously the amount would change depending on the situation... meaning if you got an exclusive shot of a guy saving a baby from a burning house.... duh. :) But is there any kind of ideas or ranges that could be given?
I am just trying to get a feel for what I would be looking at. If it is not going to be all that much, then I would concentrate my efforts in other places.
Thanks for any info. |

Can you specify which markets you're interested in?
(Photojournalism, portrait, wedding, stock, postcard/ greeting card, commission, art, other?)
That said, not only do these markets vary hugely but each one itself has a huge range of prices, so I don't know that anyone can give you anything more than the very vaguest of ballparks.

There are mainly two areas that I am interested in but they are still pretty broad.
The main thing I was looking at when I posted was photojournalism for newspaper like orginizations covering events ranging from parades, shuttle launches, emergencies, ect.
I am also interested in providing pictures for companies to use in catalogs, magazines, website, ect for fillers and advertisements.

For advertising, you could always try joining one of the stock sites like iStockphoto or Shutterstock. You won't get much per picture, but the same pictures can sell over and overa again and if your work is good enough to sell in big quantities, you might make some decent money there.

I have been looking into those types of sites and am still curious as to how many subscribers those sites have and if anyone is actually making any money off of their pictures. The theory of it is good but there are not many public stats available that I could find that shows what their buyer numbers really are. |

The average photographer doesn't make a fortune there, but there are some photographers at iStock who sell hundreds of photos every week. Shutterstock is newer, so they're still building, but speaking only for myself, that is where I'm doing more business.

The price paid for a photo (or photos) greatly depends on where they are being published. In a national magazine of high stature, you'd get from $100-$1000 depending on the photo, your reputation, and their needs. The very high end magazines are exclusive and do not take many unsolicited photos. Local venues are far more likely to publish your photos, but they will pay far less. If you're sending photos to a local magazine of some kind, I think you're probably lucky to get $25-$100 for a photo. If your local magazine has a wide readership (like in a large city), you can still expect that same price, but a little higher.
In sum, magazines pay widely differing sums.
Good luck. Local is a good place to start! Do it!

Get hold of Photographer's Market, a necessary purchase if you are interested in selling your photos to magazines.
