Sometime i wonder... to critique a picture, is it only those more experianced can critique?

Art as in photography is a subjective thing, but sometimes when i get 'not so +ve' comments of my work i would challenge them to show some their own to show me how it is suppose to be done.

The thread which leads me to asking this question

*i wonder if anyone can understand my question :P

Absolutely not. You are not required to even know anything about art to comment on the work of art of others. Now, that said, it depends on the types of comments an artist receives.

If you get a comment that talks about halos, sharpening, highlights, desaturation, then chances are someone is either well educated or thinks they are well educated in the field. This is the gray area where you can ask the question: well, show me your work.

If however, a person leaves a comment explaining why he/she did not like the photography in layman's terms (did not like the colors, or the subject, or the perspective/pov) then it is probably true that your work of art did not touch them the way you expected it to.

As far as I am concerned, I am not calling myself an artist. I still only take snapshots, with an occasional planned outing to take a good photo. However, by reading about techniques and comments on my and other people's photos, I am able to recognize the good elements of a photo and sometimes make an educated guess on why do I think certain photo is or isn't exceptional.

The way my learning is progressing, I am more capable of criticizing other people's work at this stage than I am of producing a photo of similar quality. But still I do not think that just because I am no scalvert or graphicfunk or jjbeguin, it does not mean that my comments are less worthy.

(There are others on this site whose work I admire, but did not want to list them all here, the posting is long enough as it is.)
