3rd party lenses are made for major brands, not just Canon. You can buy a 50mm Nikkor 1.8 or 1.4 and they both would be compatible. But on the D70 you will have to 1.5 crop factor into consideration. I have a 50mm f/1.8 and I love it. I use it both on the FE10 and D70.

Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and Phoenix (as well as others i suppose) make lenses that will work on Nikon cameras. they also make lenses for Canon, Minolta, Olympus cameras.

Check //www.bhphoto.com and search for lenses that fit nikon cameras.

I am not aware of any lens that fits the D70 that will not also function on other Nikon cameras. Some "features" are not supported, body to body, depending on the electronics of the particular lens/body combination......however, lenses that function on one will at least manually function on the other. One of the reasons that Nikon has kept the same mount for so many years/decades. For 3rd party lenses to work on a Nikon body, they must replicate the Nikon mount....therefore multiple body applications.

With the exception of the Nikkor DX lenses that are made specifically for Nikon DSLR cameras.

From the Nikon site:

While a DX-type AF-Nikkor lens can be mounted and used on a film SLR camera, it is are not recommended to do so. DX lenses are designed to cover the image sensor in Nikon digital SLR cameras, which is smaller than the 35mm film frame. Consequently, the image produced by a DX lens will not cover the full 35mm film frame, resulting in a severely vignetted photo.

"Regular" (non-DX) Nikkor lenses can be used on either a film or digital SLR. When used on a digital SLR the angle of view will be reduced because of the smaller sensor size (when compared to 35mm film).
