Yesterday I took a really good pic and the sky looks almost like it is burned a little bit, it has a little dramatic look to it. So I've been working with it today trying to actually burn it, but when I do, it looks really fake. What brush do you guys typically use for burning skies? Thanks |

Hmmmm, good question. I have to say that there are no one brush that will work. This style has to be done with a lot of experimenting with a sortment of brushes. Although, I start out with using a large soft edge brush (200-300 pix), mode: Normal, opacity: 100%, and the flow: 65% and and go from there. Also, I'm betting that your photo lookes fake is due to the pressure of your pen/mouse. Bring down the pressure to about 55% to 65%. See how that goes. Happy burrning! |

There's a great tutorial on dodging/burning here |

If you are working with a mouse, set the brush almost as large as the smallest dimension of the area you want to burn, then set the range to midtones and the exposure to 5%. Repeated passes are necessary, but this will give you the ability to make it look natural.

You can also try selecting the sky section and applying the layer option multiply I've had good results with that. |

I don't use the dodge and burn tools... There is a better way.
Add a 50% greyscale layer to the image and brush on that layer with black to darken (burn) and brush with white to lighten(dodge). It is better because it does not mess with your actual image and is more easily thrown away or corrected if there are mistakes after the fact. a 10% opacity on the brush is a good starting point. Use kirbic's brush size suggestion.
There is a good tutorial on that technique here:
