Ok. I know there have been many recent threads on weddings, weddings on beaches, and the like....BUT!

They must be out of their minds!

I have a very dear cousin who is going to be married April 17 in the Caribbean--on a beach--at sunset. I have been asked to be the primary photographer at the event.

BUT get this: The bride is wearing a traditional white gown. The groom is wearing a black tux with white shirt. The best man will be in white shirt and kakki pants.

AND AS IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH of a challenge: The mothers (yes, both of them) have agreed to wear sequined dresses!

The rest of us will probably be in some sort of colorful "island" wear.

HELP! How do I handle this?

Use a video recorder? :P

If it's at sunset then at least you wont have to worry with extreme harsh light. Maybe they'll have tiki torches.

If things get really desperate maybe you can suggest that if they want good pictures that they're rethink their clothing options.

Ohhhh, I so wish! But the mother of the groom has, apparently, dyed shoes to match--purple! (We are not talking about reasonable people here, I think.)

Hopefully if it will be at sunset, they will think about the angle of light anticipated (exactly where does the sun set in relation to the beach??), and plan accordingly so that the light is complementary. If so, it shouldn't bee all that bad, especially if you use a light touch of fill flash. You might want to consider a flash bouncer with a gold insert for that fill.
Good luck!

Tell me more. I rarely use the flash on my 300D. It's rather harsh at close proximity. I don't (yet) own an off camera flash. Should this be a serious consideration? (Flash, bracket, etc.)

What's a "flash bouncer" and "gold insert"? Sorry for being dull, but I mostly like to take pictures of vegetation. (I have done weddings for friends and family in the past--sort of journalistic/candid-style, and they seem to like the results.)

I certainly wouldn't recommend using the on-camera flash for fill. An off-camera flash woud be a good investment, but only if you have time to play around prior to the event to get comfortable with how to get the results you want.
With regard to the flash bouncer look here. I use the 80-20 indoors, and outdoors with an insert (the gold metallic insert works well inlate light).
If you're used to doing weddings in a candid style, you'll like the flexibility an external flash gives you to bounce off ceilings, giving you a more natural look without the severe constraints of existing light.

Kirbic,
Thanks for the advice and the link. It looks like I might actually be going to a city next Wed. where I could (maybe) purchase the "Big Bounce" or something similar, by LumiQuest. Looks like I'm going to have to do some reading....soon!

Ray,
Drinking will be involved. Maybe I'll send a bottle of something with the photo cd.

Moodville,
Let's hope for tiki torches!

All,
I could use any help you may have to offer.

(I hate weddings. I hate weddings. I hate weddings....the next time I marry my husband, we've agreed, we'll elope!)
