I'm still wondering about this,

In a big city, how does one approach people in the streets. "Hey can I take your picture" doesn't sound really good. And after that, how do you convince them to sign a model release?

I see alot of interesting people in Montreal, Lots of different style and it would make a great series. So I'm looking for suggestion on how some of you folks do it.

I hide behind trees and mailboxes.

I have yet to get the guts to ask someone if I can snap away.

Set up your camera on a tripod, aimed down the street and look casual. People will think you are doing a job and ignore you.

When no-one is looking, shot away as fast as possible...then leg it!!

I posted this the other day, which was my last and best effort for Boredom but not good enough for "the show".

I took around 6 shots of this guy and three other people without them knowing it. None of the group looked particulary friendly (all showed signs of a bad childhood) so I slinked around them casually, pretended as if I was shooting whatever in the opposite direction and quickly peeked over whenever I could to tweak and then shoot. Risky bidness.

No ribbons but a medal for bravery...perhaps?

Here's what I did. Print out a bunch of mini-model release forms (about 4" x 8") and keep them in your camera bag. After taking a photo of someone that you decide you like, approach them and tell them that you've taken their photo and if they wouldn't mind signing the mini form.

The bottom of the mini-form tears away and I give that piece to them. It contains my name, phone # and email address. If the photo is flattering or of their child I would offer to send them a copy.

Just an idea....

Thats pretty much the idea I had. I am thinking about having business cards made up with my name and email address on them. After I take the picture, I write down the file name of it on a card and give it to them. Then they can go to the website, download the model release form, sign it, and return it. Once I have received it back, they will get the picture I took in the email.

This way you can still get your form and their motivation is to get a free picture.

Of course this will only work for people with internet access.

With a 12X zoom I can just shoot, but enough distance to still run away :P
