when entering a challange is it okay to remove the background from a photo? can i crop just the model/subject out of a photo and paste it on a solid white or black background in photoshop??? I do not understand the rules on this matter. If this is not allowed how do you get a soild black or white background without using a cloth backdrop? (or any backdrop). Can I take the photo against a white wall than remove the detail and texture from the wall?

You can't just cut out part of the image and place it onto a new background because you are 1- removing a major element of the photo, and 2- creating a composite of two images, both of which are against the rules even in an advanced editing challenge.

You'd have to find something white to shoot in front of.

If the BG contains more than incidental detail (like folds in a backdrop) then removing it will probably cross the line into "major elements." It's not posible to say that it will or won't - each case is different - but it usually will. It is always best to get closest to the results you want in the camera, and tweak from there.
