What type of bird is this?

This is a nuthatch not a good picture though!The red breasted does have a black stripe on its head unlike the white breasted in the picture!

After Googling a bit, I think Neil is closer. I can't find a similar nuthatch, though the size suggested that. Where's Van when you need him, LOL?

Looks like a downy woodpecker from the small size probably female or immature from the missing red patch? It looks small to me also Fritz!

I was going to say a woodpecker of some sort, but when seeing how tiny he (she?) is, I'm not so sure. I'm not so good at identifying non-parrot birds, sorry. Cute little fellow, whatever he is.

Yes it would be the male!The hairy woodpecker is slightly larger with a noticably larger bill and that is the easyest way to tell the difference between a downy and a hairy woodpeckers.You are more likley to see downys in backyards and hairys in forests.

Definitely a Downy Woodpecker. Dark phase too by the look of it. Nice capture.
