I was testing out a DSLR i borrowed from a friend, one picture i took i really liked however after doing what i call "editing" i was very satisfied with the end result it could possibly pass for "ok" but in the top right corner of the photo the subjects hair blends in with the shadows and at the point iam not really sure how exactly to fix it thanks,

Hmm go back to step one... before you start your editing see if you can lighten that shadow. Use whatever method works for you, extract, clone, whatever.

I really like the post processing you did, but you're right about the shadow.

Beautiful little girl! You might go a little less brightening on the teeth (they're almost aglow), but on another layer, you might dodge the whites of her eyes just slightly. I like the sepia effect also.

Leon -- here's a quick and dirty fix. I cloned out the shadow behind her (not very neatly mind you) and cropped in tighter to get rid of most of the background. Next time don't position your subject get so close to the background. It will reduce such a harsh shadow.

She's adorable.

When using an oncamera flash - get the subject away from the background so the shadow does not so what it did here.

Next, get teh flash high above the camera so any shadow that is created is behind and below the subject and will not be seen by the camera.

Great picture..love the color shot..I would just clone out that shadow; I see why you couldnt' do the color one: all the decoration on the blouse.

I really like what debi did when i looked at it i almost felt stupid like wow she did that so fast gosh so basically you jus clone out the shadows i bet there isnt a way to do that to the finished version is there with out messing up since the over compostion is so dark i'll jus have to start over again yea her teeth are white i jus wasnt happy maybe its jus me ...lol
thanks

you could always put another flash unit behind the subject with a slave to trigger it when the on-camera flash goes off. all you need is a cheap flash, a $20 slave unit and a makeshift tripod, will nicely highlight the background and eliminate shadow.

Here's a quick take in a completely different direction. Not my usual "style" but it's certainly hanging out over on the softglow side:

Leon, I think you've got the makings of a really terrific photo here. Personally, I like your edited version a lot. My suggestion would be to crop it differently; move the bottom up like debitipton did, as well as the top. I think it's too close there.

One comment about the hair getting lost in the shadows. We all tend to be our own worst critics. If you show the version you posted to the girl's mother, without comment about "I should have done it this way..." or "It would have been better if...", she's going to love it, and you'll be making a print for her.

If the only real reason for your post is that you are just trying to learn to improve your processing techniques, then hopefully you're getting what you need.

Now go show the pic (as it is) to the girl's mother, and get ready to print it!

Hey Leon, this is the best one of all, including the other poster's fixes! Good work. The girl's mother is going to be thrilled.

Thanks alot, Iam still confused as to whats a sutiable size for the picture in its current state its 1692x2196 iam going to be printing it up 8x10 should i reduce the size?
03/24/2005 02:14:06 PM · #18
I wouldn't reduce it if you are going to print unless the size is not going to match the multiple of 8X10 and you definitely want to fill it in both directions - if so you may have to crop accordinly... The print will automatically make it fit on a 8X10 - so keep as much info as you can for the best picture..

OK Thanks :)

If you bounce the flash from the ceiling you would get more pleasing results and not so many harsh shadows, less post processing = more picture taking In my view.

Your final photo is beautiful Leon.

Quick job - but I enjoy workin on these types of things..

I think what I like about your final photo Leon is that you eliminated most of the distractions - the background and the pattern on her shirt. The eye is drawn to her sweet facial features; it's soft looking and yet very distinctive, which I think is what would matter to her mom the most.

After i look at the comparison between the the first final and the last final i like the lighter version versus the darker its not exactly perfect there are some imperfection but i noticed when i print at least on walmarts minilab the imprefection arent even noticeable so .....lol
