My gosh! I've heard this and that about Neat Image, and didn't give it the chance of a thought. I figured I was to computer-dumb to even attempt to bother with it. Low scores as of late have started to frustrate the hack out me, so I decided to give it a try. I downloaded the demo (yup, I'm cheap!) and gave it a whirl with some of my old entries. Man, I wish I would've downloaded it earlier. I think some of my scores would've been drastically higher.

You burn the software to a CD ROM when you download it, and use that as an archive.

Yup, better. And you can make it simpler yet (and basic-editing legal), if you're working in photoshop, by doing the neatimage and then using edit/fade neatimage to merge it down. But you can also adjust the amount of noise reduction directly in neatimage to avoid the plastic attack.
Incidentally, NI set at very low noise reduction is an exceptionally good sharpener if applied to a 640-pixel image instead of USM, it has a section for varying the sharpening as well.
