Bah! I have that crappy (yes, it's a crappy lens!) Sigma 170-500, have taken moon shots, and they are significantly better than the one from the link. Of course, no where near as good as the Canon 500.

When I bought the 170-500 (pre-dslr), my needs were simple and my budget was small. It did it's job and I was happy with the results (this is the ultimate lens test). I'm no longer happy with the results from that lens. I've looked at my shooting patterns with it, so I can say that today, despite my budget being smaller, I would certainly go without and save for longer to buy a Canon (fast, prime, and L).

I could post some 100% crops (w/o post-processing) at 500mm with it, but I'm pretty sure it underperforms the 50-500 quite a bit.
