i used to use canons software to convert my raw files, and they seemed to come out really soft... i even blamed the lens for it but one day i decided i had to try another software since i heard some people say in some threads that sometimes the problem could be on the program, i tried bible but wasn't very happy with it...
Then i tried Raw Shooter and i just got amazed by the performance of this program... It just turn everything upside down my photos started to have another feel to it... They came from soft images to sharp and clean images... i won't change for some time now i am very happy with this software... i even recommended it to some people...
If you haven't tried it just go and try it it's amazing.

I don't know if anyone's posted about this yet (here or in another recent RAW thread, but pwm6 pointed me to an excellent review/comparison of the various RAW converters:

What a useful thread! Thanks everyone!
I'll shortly be developing some training for a client who wants a session on understanding and converting RAW and basic Photoshop too.
I have bought the recommended book on Raw using PS Camera Raw and will be reading it before I start work on the course plus a number of other recommended resources.
But one thing client asked was whether Camera Raw was best tool for them (they do have PS CS so I thought it probably would be but don't have experience of any other convertors with exception of brief use of Digital Photo Professional which I didn't like).
Client also asked about ACDSee but I don't know anything about it.
Can anyone shed any light on this tool AND also on any other RAW convertors and any known benefits/ disadvantages to each listed.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!

And what about Capture One?
I was talking to a pro who currently uses Camera Raw and was considering Capture One instead?!

I'm using Photoshop CS2 for RAW...works fine for me. I haven't seen any softness, etc... Maybe I'm so new to working with these type files, I don't know what all to watch for yet.

I've only played with C1 a little bit, certainly not enough to rate it, but a bunch of the LL people seem to think it's the best (with others rating ACR higher). I'd guess it's more of a vertical move. CS2's ACR has features that are similar to what C1 had long ago. Many report that C1 is fast (faster than ACR anyway) and awesome quality. It has a different (more standard in my opinion) approach to dealing with (custome) camera profiles.
Last time I looked at C1, the useful feature sets (to me - like unlimited batch or something) were only in the pro version which I thought was priced a little high.
If you have CS/CS2 I don't think there's any need to run out and get C1, but it's worth having a look (trial download available I believe). The interface is different, which may translate to better in some eyes. |

I am not thinking of going out and getting it - I am happy that ACR will be absolutely fine for me - it's just that I'm going to be talking a client through RAW and RAW converting soon and he's asked about other converters and whether he should be thinking about using one of them instead of ACR...
I haven't got time (nor money) to actually trial them, to be honest time is the biggest issue, I can't really even trial the free ones, so I'm really soaking in the opinions from those of you with more experience so that I can at least pass on a little of it. I'll make it clear to him, of course, that I'm passing on opinions of others, not my own.

kind off topic - however, i have started using RSE - i am saving as 16 bit TIFF. when i open them in PS6 as a 16 bit TIFF - my layer options are all not accessible as well as quick mask mode. it's telling me i need to convert to 8 bit for these features to be accessible. is this just an issue with PS6 over newer versions?
i like the interface, the speed, and the quality of the results in RSE - but would like to keep my PS6 workflow consistent to what i am accustomed to, as well as maintain 16bit if possible. is it possible?

PS CS and CS2 allow you to process 16 bit images whereas earlier versions were limited.

ugh. well - the switch to 8 bit has to happen at some point, was hoping it could in the later stages... maybe i will have to shell out the cash for an upgrade. seems there are too many things asking me for money these days. i am in the midst of a genetic breakthrough, however, my money tree is coming along - though the buds are purple instead of green... ;}

Yeah, that advice wasn't for you, it was for your client: It's worth having a look at the C1 trial as you won't sacrifice quality. I think that Bibble and RSE have their advantages too, price being the main one, but I also think you're giving up quality (both image and software).

downloaded RSE few weeks ago...havent played with it though. Got my 350 XT about the same time, and it takes priority. Just opened RSE to play with it, even took a brief look at the tutorial, and I cant even figure out how to load an image. Does it support CR2?

I'm in Rawshooter Essential.
How do I save or transfer this file to anything anywhere?
To Jpeg would be great.

add the file to batch convert - gear symbol.
on the right side at the top, there is a tab to set up your output options.

You simply browse using it to a directory with some raw images. They should show in the thumbnail view, and then you can change the settings. After that, you go to the batch convert tab and "add" one or more thumbnails to the conversion queue. |

Do you play with the RAW image or do you convert it to a tiff file first. Like for DPC, would it be RAW>tiff>jpeg?
I just played with a RAW file and converted it to a Max quality jpeg and it pixelates when I zoom in faster than if it were a lower quality jpeg.
At 4.33 megs it should be sturdier.
