BAh!! Who cares about a little electricution!!! I've lost an amazing photo here people!!!! At least as far as you know anyways. :-)
Just kidding of course... I don't know. I always thought you weren't suppose to talk on the phone but as My husband pointed out to me ever so gently during the last storm... "You think the electricity is going to shoot through a cordless phone?!?!"

I have almost got hit by lightning twice, once it hit and melted house wires right under my feet burnning them and the second time it came through a wall outlet in my bedroom turning the entire wall black. So I guess everyone should just stay away from me during storms but don't worry about the phone...lol. |

get yourself an uninteruptable power supply (UPS). i have one, if i lose power my computer can stay on for about an hour, giving me enough time to save everything and properly shut down. also protects you from power surges/brownouts/etc through your cable line, power, and telephone lines. quite a handy piece of equipment to have.

Is that where you got your screen name from? |

UPS is cool, but if you have a good surge-protector power strip, that should be enough not to fry your computer. However, power strip won't save you from voltage fluctuations that go below a certain level.
Also, your home wiring should provide you with some protection - the NEC (link to some article) defines guidelines for home building, but from what I've seen around, people either try hard to find loopholes in the standard or go by the 'it won't happen to me' motto.
And yes, you should get used to saving often, even on a bright sunny day if running windows. (I can't speak about Mac.) There is a reason why all software companies make critical upgrades at least a couple of times between two major versions of a product. My left hand is always close to Ctrl + S, whatever I do.
But you know that already by now... sorry.
Edited: added excerpt from the article so you don't have to read the whole thing. But you should, especially if you are buying a house and paying an inspector to look at it)
Failure to properly ground communications systems to the building or structure grounding electrode system as required by the NEC can result in electric shock, the destruction of electrical components, and property damage. According to insurance industry data, improper grounding of communications systems has led to $500 million dollars per year of property or equipment damage to lightning.

Presumably everyone has a surge suppresor at a minimum, anyone who doesn't is insane... The UPS is good at the next level, to protetct your work and allow you to systematically shut down when power fails. It's also a Godsend in places where the power browns out but does not go entirely off, it maintains proper voltage during the power leaks, which on the Cape can happen repeatedly for very brief periods over an extended timespan.

That happened to me a day or so ago--but, fortunately, I do all my editing and other important work (ie school papers and the like) on my laptop because, kind of like the UPS, when the power DOES goes out, I still have battery backup for another 4 hours or so (he he, nice try PGE!). |

I have been struck by lightning once and remember most of it. So when a lightning storm comes up like today I stay inside NOT NEAR ANY DOORS. Well it was a secondary strike I guess you could say. I was around 10 years old and standing in the front door looking outside at the lightning [not a good thing to do]. My family had a medal screen door and about 50 feet in front of that a large oak tree. I remember a bright quick light, like one click of a strobe then a ball of fire. It seemed to sit still for a second or two and then shoot toward the door. Within a blink of an eye it had hid the door that I was standing by. The next thing I remember was waking up across the room. My parents told me that it through me across the room and I landed on my back up against the radio / TV cabinet. I know some of you remember those long cabinets of the 70̢۪s that housed a TV, Radio, Record player, and if lucky an 8-track. Thank God I was lucky and did not sustain any injuries except a back ach after being checked out by a doctor.
Maybe thats what is wrong with me :)
EDIT: I unplug my surge protector and take the phone line out of the computer during a storm. I also disconnect my Ethernet cable. My first computer got fried through the phone line.
