Just wanted to put in my 2 cents on the canon 50mm 1.8 (not the first build). I bought this lens because I am doing a wedding in a couple weeks and wanted something for low light situations (more or less I bought it for “Just in case reasons”). I got a couple weeks in advance so I could at least try it out and get use to it before the wedding.

I had a post up asking if the 1.4 canon 50mm was worth it. I got very mixed reviews. This lens cost me just over 70$ us and I am so impressed with it. Yes it does have a plastic mount that I was not looking forward to seeing, but this lens is so light it make no difference. The lens is super sharp, at least as sharp as my 17-40L. Now I don’t know if I got a “good copy” but this lens was a steal. I know I will be shooting more of the wedding with this lens now.

So for 70$ I got a plastic, garbage feeling, faster focusing, super sharp lens. I recommend for everyone. I would have exoected to pay at least 150US for the sharpness alone. Save your money and get the 50mm 1.8.

no doubt - the best deal out there on top notch optics.
i have no complaints. well - the focus ring is kind of narrow, not an issue if you auto focus mainly - but i manually focus 95% of the time.

i have been using soley the sigma 105mm f:2.8 ex dg macro & canon 50mm f:1.8 II since last november.

Yeah I forgot to mention that I did get the Hood for it and you really can’t use manual with the hood on. There is not much room for you fingers to grip the focus ring. I have really big hands so I can’t focus well with the hood on at all. But the AF work great.

yes it's fast - but so fast that any slight camera movement, and it starts re-focusing. coming from old manual 35mm - i have never been used to auto focus. so tend not to use it.
