I like the more abstract, open-ended or methodology-based challenges which leave a lot of scope for creativity. Off the top of my head:

Yesterday
Power
Alive
Sport
Fuel
Excess
Music (I liked achiral's 'sound' suggestion)
Work
Play
...

it wasn't too long ago that we did photojournalism

I also like the magazine cover idea, infact I think it could be one of the best challenges so far. I don't think magazine covers (with the possible exception of something like Time magazine) can be described as photojournalism.

What about shooting stars :-)There'd be a lot of very tired DPC'ers at the end of the week, he he.

How about some more assorted composition techniques:
Foreground/middleground/background
Leading the eye
Triangular composition
Dynamic equilibrium
Complex and/or busy subjects

I seem to learn more on these sort of things, as opposed to the bridge/egg/pencil challenges.

Taking a well known photograph and re-creating it with a twist :) (or without the twist)

I like the challenges most which ask for using a certain technique. Blur, DOF, highkey and so on would be great. I want to add "Inverted Colour" :)

From the list of themes byby tomtinho I would like "Abstract Imagery" most.
I think we had already Capitalism in the form of the "Corporate World" challenge.

That would be great, too! Very interesting.
Maybe make the photograph in question the same for everybody.

I just spent 4 hours with an exterminator (good news is that I have no termites in the house) so how about bugs/insects once all the butterflies and preying mantis are out and about?
I'd love a challenge on domestic animals or wild animals (wildlife might allow for more than just animals).
I also have a pregnant cat so if you're ever gonna do one on birth...
;P

I like joshua's idea a lot.

Also, we can do "states" and leave it open to interpretation..."state of georgia" or "state of confusion" ;)

not sure if this has been mentioned, but how about "sporting event"?

how about Domesticity
I think it would be interesting to see how people live around the world and this give a wide area for interpretation

Chess. For all those who like to play and shoot it. It seems at least one pops up every challenge (well almost). It would force some originality into the chess photos
