I decided to take a page from the Ansel Adams book of b/w photography with the image below. It's my first real attempt at this kind of look. I could use some feedback.
Basically I scanned a color negative, adjusted levels and then used the channell mixer to convert to b/w. I think used curves and masks to get the tonal ranges I wanted in the various areas of the photo. The original was taken with a simple Olympus XA-2 point and shoot, so the tonal ranges in the original, particularly in the sky, were pretty limited. I think I did well with the foreground of the lake, but I'm a little disappointed with the sky..I don't think there was enough black to work with in the original image.

Nice image :) What did you use to scan the negative.

I used my crappy four year old Epson Perfection 1640. Not too shabby...I usually have to do a significant amount of sharpening though. |
