I've seen some pretty photo's where the streetlights look like stars.

Like this one. And there are many others.

How do you do that? Do I need a star filter?
I like the effect, so teach me please.

Yup. A star filter, or a cross-screen filter (for 4 rays) would do.

OK, so I will find one in the Cokin Database

Oh wow, one of my images - I'm honoured! :)

Sadly, I can't add much to as to how to get this effect, I took the image with my Panasonic FZ2 and the star effect was just there.

I will be re-shooting this image in the next week or so, I'll post the result on this tread.

For filters, I've recently purchased from here. The prices seem to be very good and their service was excellent (delivering to Switzerland).

Close down the aperture.
Not the greatest examples, but the stars on this were achieved simply by setting the aperture to f11 while this one shows a more exagerated effect at f22.
