Can someone check my logic here. I have ~$850 burning a hole in my pocket, and USA Photo Nation has the body only for $810.

My impulsive strategy is to buy the body now, and start saving for a cheap, but usable first lens.

a) is this strategy silly
b) if not (a), then is USA Photo Nation reasonably reputable (I don't see too much discussion about them on the forums here)
c) What would be an affordable ($200-$300) good first lens to save up for?

Thanks much for any feedback you can give.

It's a $1400 dollar body. What's wrong with this picture? Too good to be true? I'd say yes. Save your money and buy from somebody reputable.

Sounds like a bit of a con, If you've already got 850 I'd keep your money, save a little more and you'll be able to get a rebel xt from somewhere more reputable.

Hey guys, thanks for the link to that rating site, I didn't know about it. They definitely appear to be crooks.

I have my heart set on the 20D, so I will just keep saving for a couple of more months.

Where did you hear about this place? Seems like more and more places that try to con people.

I did a //froogle.googe.com search, and they were listed as the lowest price.

Okay, here are a list of other apparently disreputable shops that I have found by matching up low prices found on froogle with the reseller ratings site:

A&M Photo World
Express Cameras
USA Photo Nation
FotoConnection

Adorama is so-so at a life-time rating of 6.47, but a 6 month rating of 4.8, they have the basic kit for $1295.

Bestbuy, tonite in the store:
Rebel 300 $799
Rebelt 350 $999
20D $1499

All in stock. I think they all include the kit lens, but none were displayed with a lens. The 350 on display was silver.

Speaking of cheap, I (just on a whim - I'm not ready to act on anything yet) asked my local "reputable" dealer what a trade-in on my 300d for a 20D would be... They generously quoted $300 as long as I included the kit lens and everything that originally came in the box (uh, including the box). There is nothing wrong with my 300d. For $300 I will keep it forever and let my son and husband use it for their projects. In fact, I would BUY a 2nd 300d for $300 "just because".

I bought 3 cameras from These guys with no problem. Just call them and say no to extras. $1299US for the 20d.

they are buying wholesale and selling retail - just like trading in used car. they will sell it for $500-600. You can sell it for $500-600 on ebay.

I am sure if you called about the 20D - Body only - the will suddenly not have stock anyway - only with the lens ...
