I debated whether to bring this up or not for the past few days. After hearing how Shannon created his winning entry Nightbulb,

I became curious to what is allowed for challenges as far as editing. If you didn't read his description, he basically held up the base of a light bulb in front of a computer monitor with the distorted moon picture on it.

He wrote (refering to a picture on a moniter) Personally, it's just another prop to me- no different than a painted backdrop or model. If I happened to find an appropriate background on a billboard or sign and put something in front of it to make the shot, I doubt you'd question it.

My disagreement is that with a billboard or sign, it is what it is. With your monitor, you can put anything you edit on it. So if I wanted to stay within basic editing rules, I could go crazy with any photo I want, do all kinds of crazy rule-breaking Photoshop things to it, and then take a picture of the monitor and I'd be safe.

I don't mean to disrespect Shannon. He is one of my favorite photographers on this site. I mean it, look at my favorites - he's on it.

It just makes me start to question the validity of staying within the rules. I personally love doing multiple exposures when I take photos. But every week when I see the new challenge, I tell myself no. I have to abide by the rules. Sorry Shannon if this upsets you. I just had to bring this to light and see if anyone else has considered this.

Actually, taking a picture of just your computer monitor, with nothing in front of it, will probably get you a dq under the "artwork" rule. Now, locking this thread as the other one is fully underway.

this is from the rules (i think the moon and background are what is being judged.........that makes it wronge

rules
Artwork: Literal photographic representations of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, computer artwork, computer monitors, and televisions. A literal representation is one which is composed in such a way as to compel the voter to rate only the work of art represented and not the artistic decisions made by the photographer (e.g., lighting, composition, background elements, etc).
