I think any day now my monitor is going to explode. This one is only about a year and three months old. After I moved, when I first turn it on, the top part flickers for about 3 minutes until it is warmed up then it's fine, but it's been on for a few weeks straight now and it's starting to flicker at the top like once every ten minutes.

I actually had one monitor explode on me and it caught my room on fire...then the replacement one exploded so I bought this one instead of getting another one warranty.

What do you usually connect your monitor to? :)

I don't know what is wrong with my computer monitors. Maybe because I leave them on all the time?

I'm probably going to end up just buying some el-cheapo 17" old-school monitor because I don't have $500 to buy a flat panel, LCD -- plus, they don't look that good to me.

Then I can start giving people worse scores than I already do and I'll get crappy scores because my screen will look 100 times different than everyone else's.

Sounds like you might have some power issues. Do you have a UPS or a good surge protector?

do you have lots of power surge at your place? Perharp using a good powerbar with power-surge safeguards would keep your monitors in better health?

I did notice my DVD player kicked off on its own the other day and once a little while ago. The lights flickered when it did that so it must have tripped some sort of inner surge protector.

The surge protector I have on there now is probably like 8 years old -- it was on my tv and stuff at my old apt. So I would assume it's probably a good one. It's the old metal cased ones (not the plastic cheapo ones).

I'd replace the powerbar. Get a nice expensive one that comes with a warranty on it for your equipement. I'm just waiting for lightning to strike and fry the thing, but it's rated for at least two major strikes before replacement.

I don't know if you are on broadband or dailup but when you get a surge protector don't skimp. Get the best. Also make sure you get one with phone and cable jacks. Sometimes people don't think. Friends call and say "my computer was fried by lightning and it was unplugged" and I ask them if they have a phone line plugged into the modem and it is always yes. Well it all goes though that also. Always "Always" turn your computer off, surge protectors off and unplug from the wall when a bad storm hits. These surge protectors won't protect you against lightning. Lightning can jump 1/4 to zap everything.

Have you tried moving your monitor to another part of the room (or another room) -- I had a lot of trouble once when I inadvertantly placed my monitor opposite the electic meter on the wall outside. Gave me no end of trouble until I moved it far enough away.

Also, if your lights are flickering you may have a low-voltage problem. A good (and strong enough) UPS is vital in that situation as low voltage kills electrical things fairly quickly; just burns them up. Having the voltage checked would be a good idea as well -- along with the wiring to make certain it is up to code.
