what about a dpc photo-of-the-day, maybe base it on the image with the most views on the previous day? |

Most views can be manipulated.
Most favorites in one day on a shot can't.
Just an idea.

Hmm... number of views could lead to the same photo always being the PotD... and number of favourites would be similar too... I'd suggest that it be something like a random photo from the top 4-10 of a randomly chosen challenge, thus giving the old 'nearly a ribbon' shots an airing again. Or maybe a random photo from all the those with at least 5 favourites?

I think the spirit of POTD would be to have new photos coming in, not rehashing of prior challenge entries. Many people already post to forums saying "hey - look at this", "what do you think", etc... This could be another avenue for channeling those daily photo's.
Cool idea skip. ;^) |

I really like the idea of giving a shot from the non-ribboning top ten a day on the front page - in fact, if it was 4th through tenth that would be seven shots, and thus the period of the challenge results being up.
The only downside is that it doesn't help to get through the very good shots that are outside the top ten, I suppose, and those top ten already get more views as a result of being just one click from the front page.

How about just a front page (left side) control cycling through any image added as a favorite that day. I know we can look at the recently added favorites, but I don't visit that regularly, whereas I'm always staring at the main page.
I would rather see many good photos getting additional exposure than just one per day.
(Also: the top 10 or 20 already get a lot of good exposure. But there are many diamonds in the middle and end of the pack.)

Isn't that more like a second chance contest? Sorry you didn't get 1st, 2nd, or 3rd...give it another go?

Not really - more like a 'you didn't quite make it to ribbon world, but here's a consolation for finishing so highly'.
It's just a thought though.

Yes, but sometimes it's incredibly close and what's the harm in a little consolation prize? After all the voters got it high anyway so they may as well have another chance to see a popular shot - this time in a more random way. |

Here's what would be neat.
Let's pretend that "favourite" really meant just that - favourite. For each challenge, you get to pick your favourite photograph (just one) as you vote.
Those photographs with the most favourite-picks get shown on the front page.

That is a cool idea. I wonder how many times that would be the first, second, or third place, though?

No harm in a consolation prize I guess. Once a challenge has finished I'm ready to move on. Choosing a POTD from the same images we just got done looking at - I don't know, doesn't appeal to me. Another question, once the challenge has finished we know who the photographer is - wouldn't you want POTD to be anonymous also? I think the POTD should be new images being sent in just for that purpose - POTD.

What about if an extension of the site council (or call it a whole new council, whatever) were to select the POTD by vote, and based on the criteria of something different / interesting? This would remove the popularity contest, and the manipulation (assuming the SC isn't compromised by inflitrators!).
I think POTD should be somthing to make you think, not just another contest.

The AA winner has over 5000 views already, yet there were only 256 voters. The front page nowadays gets you seen by one helluvan audience.

I'd think it would be better to have non-challenge entries be PoTD. Most challenge photos are seen by a fair number of people who voted during the challenge or by those viewing the results after the challenge. It is usually portfolio shots that do not get as frequent viewing. Having it be portfolio shots gives people another reason to become members.
Having a randomly selected panel of judges from the active members for a week (or month) duration who go through and select their favs or votes on the image would be good. That would probably rely on having images submitted into a special category that also had a limited duration. Which basically boils down to coding a whole new section of the site and with D&L busy I cant really see that happening. Would be a cool addition tho and make the front page more dynamic than just weekly results and forums. |

It could be a cross section of those that ok the dpcprints uploaded images.
I like the POTD idea!

I use to post a Picture of the Day here that wasn't taken by this photographer.

Sounds like another good reason for a POTD (non-challenge entries)...the daily winner would get some front page coverage.

I personally would NOT want to see non-challenge entries become a part of the front page. The entire site is about the challenge. I don't want to see something hokey like a POTD Council, or a site council vote, or anything that takes away from the front page being where the WINNERS of the CHALLENGE are seen.
Some of you may be tired of seeing those pics, but I think that's a trivial thing, because you've already seen the top three, too, and THEY stay up all week.
If anything, I would like to see 4-10 be listed, in rotation, as "honorable mentions" and get one day of airtime each.
An entire "POTD" section would have to be added, where members (or not????) could upload their submissions, someone would have to write a new rulebook about how many submissions per day, (can a member submit more???), someone would have to decide whether a picture can be submitted that has ever been submitted before, whoever is supposed to vote would have to vote, on and on and on.
There are many POTD sites out there that work that way. Personally, I don't want to see that at DPC. I wouldn't mind the 4-10 thing, but no new "contests", please.
Just my opinion, not meant to offend or insult. :) |

I don't think my wife would tolerate my spending any more time at DPC anyway...honey, I'll be down in a minute - just need to get this last little file uploaded. :P
