When I offered this suggestion I had exterior shots in mind; and I included "colors" to exclude B&W shots. Not trying to squelch anyone's creative juices, just trying to get us all focused on taking the same type of shot.

I'm totally into this idea now. I have been looking up abandoned buildings, ghost towns, etc... all day. (when not working very very hard.. uh huh) Forget the challenge I'm going hunting this weekend!! |

"bump" moves it to the top of the front page, so people coming on from later time zones will see it.
Great challenge idea btw.

i think it's a great challenge idea! i'd hate to see it limited to only color photos, though. |

I don't think he intends that: Residential or commercial, rural or urban, abandoned buildings often have unique textures, colors and character. Show us a great photograph of a building that is no longer in use.
It's a list of some of the attributes that make indvidual old structures photo-worthy. I'd expect this challenge to produce a LOT of B/W, actually. And selective desat for that matter.

Wow, I love old buildings. I have a few shots.
Here is a very early shot:
A more recent one:
This one won a state competition from the Utah Historical Society:
The print is just sublime and seems to glow. The web version doesn't. I'd love a challenge like this!

Would it add a bit to the challenge to shoot an abandoned building from the inside? |

A particular old mill? A ruined church with a great interior? Must not be National Trust or English Heritage though. |
Bob, here's one not far outside Yorkshire, just over the border in Derbyshire. Bradwell Barn
Another one in Calver, Derbyshire. Calver Barn
This one is in South Yorkshire between Doncatser and Rotherham. Roche abbey - oh but that one ios English Heritage I think.

Thanks, first one looks really interesting! I might be in touch if I venture over that way this summer. I'm specifically looking for something a bit gothic... any ideas anyone? |

Great idea. Stephenville, NL where I live is full of old American Airforce Base buildings. Many are abandonned.
